The Bright Autumn Festival runs for a few weeks every April and May, and this town goes absolutely mad for it. Every deciduous tree in the valley turns gold and red, the main street fills with market stalls, and you'll find live music spilling out of pubs most nights. If you're planning to come, you'll want to book early. We're talking months ahead, not weeks.

We're about three minutes on foot from the centre of town. That matters more than you'd think when the car parks are chockers and you've had a couple of wines at the brewery.

The park's got powered sites for caravans and camper vans, cabins if you're after four walls and a bed that doesn't fold away. The cabins sleep up to six, though four's more comfortable if you actually like your travel mates. They've got a little kitchenette, a decent-sized fridge, and enough bench space to make breakfast without playing Tetris with the toaster. Cabins book out first, so if that's what you're after, get onto it.

Sites are gravel and grass mix. Most are shaded by old gums, which is great in summer but means you'll be sweeping leaves off the awning in autumn. Fair trade-off. You've got access to hot showers, a camp kitchen with a couple of good barbecues, and a laundry if you need it. The amenities block's been done up in the last few years, so it's all pretty clean and functional.

Here's what we reckon you should do while you're here. Hit the festival markets early on a Saturday morning before the crowds properly arrive. There's a bloke who sells sourdough that's genuinely worth queueing for, and the coffee van near the rotunda knows what they're doing. The Canyon Walk's about ten minutes' drive out of town and it's where you'll get the best colour. Go mid-morning when the light's hitting the trees side-on. If you've got kids, the park by the river has a decent playground and they can chuck rocks in the water for an hour while you sit on a bench with a book.

One thing to know: mobile reception's patchy depending on your carrier. Telstra's fine. Optus is hit and miss. If you need to Zoom into a work meeting or stream something, we've got Wi-Fi at reception, but it's not fast enough to run three Netflix streams at once. Manage expectations.

The town itself gets busy, but it's not unpleasant busy. You'll share the main street with a lot of grey nomads, families with young kids, and the occasional group of blokes on motorcycles. Everyone's here for the same thing. The pubs put on extra staff and the bakery runs out of pies by lunchtime most days, so plan accordingly.

When you're looking at Bright Autumn Festival accommodation options, most of the places closer to the main drag charge a premium during festival weeks. We're a short walk out, which keeps the rate a bit more reasonable and means you're not listening to live music till midnight if that's not your thing. You can still hear it faintly, but it's background noise rather than front-and-centre.

If you're towing a van longer than about six metres, let us know when you book. Some of the sites are easier to reverse into than others, and we'll make sure you're not stuck doing a seventeen-point turn next to someone's annex. We've all been there. It's not fun.

Check-in's from two onwards, check-out's by ten. If you rock up early we can usually find somewhere to park the van while your site's being sorted, but ring ahead so we know you're coming.
