Dog-Friendly Accommodation Bright Locals Actually Recommend

Bright's one of those rare spots where you can actually take your dog places. The town's got proper footpaths along the river, cafés with outdoor seating that don't give you dirty looks, and trails where a lead and decent recall are all you need. Leaving your mate locked in a cabin all day would be a waste.

The Hotham Cabins sleep four. There's a bunk in the living area and a separate room with a double bed, plus a bar fridge. They're compact but they work, and your dog's welcome inside, not just tied up outside. The Buffalo Cabins are a bit bigger if you're bringing the family, they'll fit five with a queen bed in the living space plus a side room with a triple-single bunk, and you get a full-sized fridge. Both options are pet-friendly, which around here means what it says.

If you're towing a van or bringing a tent, all our powered sites take pets. Most people with dogs go for a powered site near the back fence where there's a bit more grass and fewer kids riding bikes past your awning at 7am. You'll have access to the amenities block, and there's a tap nearby so you're not lugging water across the park every time the dog's bowl runs dry.

You do need to mention your pet when you book. We won't take unannounced animals on arrival. It's not a negotiation. Maximum two pets per booking, and they've got to be on a lead anytime they're outside your cabin or site. We've had a couple of cattle dogs who thought the bins were fair game, so we're clear about that now.

The river's a ten-minute walk from the park. In summer half the town's down there with their dogs, and the water's cold enough to keep a kelpie interested for hours. If you're here in autumn the Canyon Walk's worth doing early morning, the light's good through the elms and you'll see plenty of other people with dogs on the track. There's no off-lead areas right in town, but Mystic Park's about five minutes' drive and it's fenced if your dog's recall is optimistic at best.

A few cafés along Gavan Street have water bowls out the front and don't mind a dog under the table. The IGA's got a decent pet aisle if you've forgotten something, and the vet's on the main road heading towards Myrtleford in case anything goes sideways. We've got a hose near the amenities block for rinsing off muddy paws before they get back in the cabin, which you'll appreciate after a walk in the pine plantation when it's been wet.

One thing to know is we're near the bike path, so if your dog loses their mind at cyclists you'll want to keep them on a short lead near the front of the park. And we're not far from the main road, so noise from traffic does carry in the mornings. It's not constant, but it's there. Most dogs don't care, but if yours is nervy it's worth knowing.

The town's set up for it, and our cabins and sites mean you're not stuck trying to sneak a staffy into a hotel room at midnight.
